Grace Guyol was the guest speaker for our February 23^rd meeting. Personal illness and research for writing her book, Healing Depression and Bipolar Disorder without Drugs made Grace an ardent environmentalist. She has also written a sixty-two page booklet entitled, ”Earth-Friendly Alternatives”. She founded and is President of Clean Up Stonington Harbor (CUSH). Today, Grace spoke about CUSH, which she promotes in our area. Grace has an honest approach to environmentalism and feels it is critical to protect our environment. Through CUSH, she collects data and informs our residents about pollution and how to help our local harbors.

Guided Tour of Orchids in Turkey, April 4-18, 2010

Holly Chase has an exciting Botanical Tour of Turkey organized for April 4-18, followed by an extension trip to Cappadocia April 17-20. This is professionally guided by a Turkish taxonomist and a Swedish orchidologist. Holly promises a special gift to our Mystic Garden Club for each member who joins the trip. This is a grand opportunity to explore ancient historic lands while learning about the magnificent flora of the area.

Guest Speaker for January Meeting

The monthly meeting scheduled for January 26, 2010, will feature speakers Carol Hamby and Sheila Elliot. Their topic will be “Gardening in and out of Prison”, regarding their experiences gardening at the Niantic Women’s prison.

Winter Bird Tour

From our friends at the New London Maritime Society, there are two events of interest, both featuring Maggie Jones, Director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, as speaker:

The Third Thursday Lecture on January 21, 2010, 6:30-8:00pm, is entitled “Winter Birding Along the Shore,” Admission $10 for non-members of NLMS, sponsored by the New London Water Authority.

Then, an Excursion on Saturday, January 23, 2010, 2-4 pm, is entitled “Birding Along the Thames River to Ocean Beach,” meeting at the Fort Trumbull parking lot, Fee $12 for non-members of NLMS, also sponsored by the New London Water Authority. Bring binoculars.
